2024 Review: Events and Initiatives to Increase the Number of Women in Technology

The end of the year gives us the perfect opportunity to pause for a few minutes, take stock, and celebrate our triumphs—big and small. In the fast-paced rhythm of everyday life, we sometimes forget to acknowledge the value of what we’re achieving. I believe it’s very important to pause, give thanks, and appreciate every step we’ve taken. This exercise fills us with energy to continue on our path with greater strength and clarity.

Gender equality, especially in the tech sector, is an issue I’ve been passionate about for many years. I firmly believe in the importance of closing the gender gap in this field, and I’m committed to doing my part along the way. I truly feel very fortunate to be part of communities that share this vision and allow me to contribute on both a personal and professional level.

In this regard, this year has been especially rewarding. I’ve had the privilege of participating in and leading initiatives that empower women in technology and raise their visibility. Each of these experiences fills me with energy and reinforces my commitment! Although there is still a long way to go, knowing that we are, in some way, part of this change drives me to redouble my efforts.

Being part of the Google Women Techmakers community is an incredibly exciting and enriching experience. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with inspiring women, make an impact, and help highlight female talent in technology. As part of the Google Techmakers Uruguay community, we carried out the following initiatives:

• Nov. 20 – End to End: Being a Woman in a Tech Role An event organized in partnership with +Mujeres en UX and Mujeres IT. We featured a panel of prominent women in IT who shared their experiences as women in technology, followed by a networking session to connect with experts.

• 11/16 – WTM Presentation at Google DevFest Montevideo We participated in DevFest Montevideo, organized by GDG, where we introduced the WTM community, shared statistics on women in technology in Uruguay, and extended an invitation to future events.

• 10/29 – Talk at WTM El Alto, Bolivia: “Navigating Cultural Diversity: Keys to Success in Multicultural Teams.” A talk designed to strengthen intercultural leadership skills, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to leverage diversity in global teams.

• August 29 – Financial Innovation: Let’s Talk About Investment and Technology An event 100% focused on personal finance and technology. Featuring Janeth Der, who spoke about investment options in Uruguay, and Aldana Paglialunga, who presented her financial management app, Próspera.

• May 24 – Post on the WTM Uruguay Blog An article on the gender gap in technology in Uruguay, exploring challenges and opportunities in STEM education. View the post here.

• March 19 – “Impact the Future” Tech Breakfast At the Globant Uruguay offices, we celebrated International Women’s Day with an event focused on leadership in IT, inspiring panels on career transitions, and networking opportunities.

Additionally, in my role as CCO at WorkWithPlus, I’ve had the opportunity to participate in various activities, initiatives, and events. I’m proud to collaborate on initiatives with a clear and meaningful purpose, working to promote inclusion and women’s empowerment in technology.

Educational Initiatives:

We organize activities that bridge technology and gender equality, inspiring new generations to explore careers in IT.

• 11/20 – Visit to UTEC Rivera (40 students)

• 10/11 – Visit to Liceo de Flores (5th and 6th-year science students, 35 students) During both visits, we inspired students in the IT field by discussing roles within the industry, the importance of soft skills, and the gender gap in STEM.

• April 25 – Techy for the Day We welcomed 24 girls as part of International Girls in ICT Day. They learned about the IT sector and academic options, and developed a basic app using GeneXus and WorkWithPlus.

Talks and presentations on AI and digital transformation:

Throughout the year, I’ve also had the opportunity to represent WorkWithPlus at various events, sharing our vision on modernization, AI, and digital transformation. Here are some of them:

• GeneXus, TechDays, and GXTours events: Rosario (Argentina), Bogotá (Colombia), Asunción (Paraguay), Corrientes (Argentina), Santiago (Chile).

Activities in honor of International Women’s Day (March 8):

Throughout March, we led initiatives at WorkWithPlus to raise awareness of the gender gap and promote equality in the IT sector.

• March 8 – Internal presentation at WorkWithPlus: I participated in a talk on the gender gap, sharing data and initiatives to promote equality in IT roles.

• March 8 – WorkWithPlus Blog: Article “The Gender Gap in Numbers,” exploring key statistics in IT. Link: WorkWithPlus blog post
