Anxiety: The Challenge of Leading and Innovating Today
How can we innovate in an environment of constant change? After a conversation with Sofia Greyer, I’m reflecting on anxiety within teams and why returning to our purpose is the key.
Today I had the pleasure of participating in an Innovation MasterClass with Sofia Geyer. Beyond all of Sofi’s incredible knowledge, experience, and clarity—and I’m immensely grateful to her for her generosity with her time and for creating such a rich space for exchange—I’m left with something that came up spontaneously during the class. It was a point on which all of us agreed: anxiety.
Back to Basics: The Antidote to AnxietyIt’s a feeling that seems to permeate everything: it affects teams developing products and solutions, those leading organizations, those devising strategies, and those seeking to innovate. Every conversation seems to end up on the same topic. And it makes sense: rapid technological changes, a terrifying geopolitical landscape, market shifts that throw us off balance, and a LOT more.
Anxiety permeates everything. In light of this, some key questions arise: What do we do in this context? How do we move forward when it seems like everything is constantly changing? Where do we focus our attention?
Back to Basics
In situations like this, I believe we need to go back to basics. It’s not about “pretending nothing’s wrong” and acting as if nothing is happening, but neither is it about rushing off trying to keep up with an impossible pace that leads nowhere.
It’s time to reconnect with our purpose, mission, and identity—with who we are and why we do what we do. But not to remain stagnant, rather to move forward with meaning, direction, and the right focus. When the outside world is chaotic, inner clarity is our best compass.
Focus on People
From purpose and mission, the next step is to bring it down to the people—our teams, clients, partners, and our entire community. They, too, are experiencing this anxiety, and it is the human factor that defines the direction we should take.
Here, a fundamental element comes into play: strategic communication. Today more than ever, I believe the best way to combat anxiety is through transparency and clarity.
Breaking Out of Our Bubbles
We live in a fragmented world where everyone inhabits their own bubble. Sometimes we assume that what we think is obvious or self-evident, or that we’ve already said it a thousand times, but chances are it hasn’t even registered on the other person’s radar.
We need to build a common framework. Being on the same page means stating openly and directly: what we’re doing, what we know, what we don’t know, and what we’re testing.
Open communication fosters trust and enables us to build together, assessing whether our mission remains valid or if we need to redefine it.
A Call for Connection
My invitation today is to communicate more. To come together (even better if it’s face-to-face!), to make no assumptions, to talk, to ask questions, and to ask for help when necessary.
In times of rapid technological change, anxiety, and uncertainty, what sets us apart is returning to our connections, being present, active listening, and trust.
See you next time!
